Greetings from the President

전 세계로 진출하여 해외에 거주하는 한국의 동포는 약 750만명이라고 합니다. 많은 동포들이 제각기 특별한 사연으로 조국을 떠나 살고 계시며, 각자의 처한 환경을 한인들간의 소통과 협력을 바탕으로 극복하며, 성공적인 삶을 이루어가고 있다고 생각합니다. 캐나다를 합한 북미는 그 중에서도 가장 많은 이민자들이 진출한 곳입니다. 그리고 여러분들도 아시듯이 우리 동포들이 살고 계시는 대부분의 크고 작은 지역에는 ‘한인회’가 있습니다. 한인회는 한인들의 권익을 신장시키고, 대한민국의 위상을 높이는데 앞장서서 많은 노력을 기울이는, 이민 동포들을 대표하는 중요한 기관입니다. 한인회는 동포들의 확실한 자리매김을 위한 미국주류 사회로의 진출을 위해서 다방면으로 협조하고 있고, 동포들의 정체성은 물론 대한민국 고유의 문화도 이어가면서, 강한 한인 사회를 구축해 나가도록 독려하는 기관입니다.

시카고한인회의 역사는 1962년으로 거슬러 올라갑니다. 유학생 등 한인사회의 주요인사들이 모여 미래 한인동포사회를 이끌어갈 구심점이 필요하여 설립된 한인회가 오늘 63년이 흘러 37대에 이르렀습니다. 부끄럽게도 저는 한인회 봉사를 하기 전까지는 이런 한인회에 큰 관심이 없었으며, 따라서 한인회를 잘 몰랐습니다. 그런 제가 35-36대 한인회를 거치는 지난 4년간 수석부회장으로 봉사하는 경험을 하게 되었고, 그동안 한인회의 중요성과 소중함을 절실하게 깨달았으며, 그 마음을 기반으로 시카고 한인사회의 새로운 발전을 가져오겠다는 각오로 선거에 출마하여 2025년 7월부터 시카고 한인회장으로 임기를 시작하게 되었습니다. 그리고 37대 시카고 한인회가 출발하면서 새롭게 세운 슬로건이 있습니다. 그것은 바로 “도약, 하나로!” 입니다. 이는 제 35,36 대 한인회의 튼튼한 기반을 배경으로 힘차게 뛰어 오른다는 의미입니다. 도약은 연속성을 기반으로 합니다. 35,36대를 이어 37대에도 저와 함께 같이 뛰기로 한 파트너로서 많은 임원들과 이사님들, 그리고 새롭게 저와 함께 해 주시기로 하신 모든 임원, 이사님들께도 진심으로 감사 드리며, 한인사회의 화합과 권익 증진, 그리고 차세대 육성을 위해 함께 힘쓰겠습니다. 이를 위해 구체적인 실천은 외교정책위원회, 행복나눔위원회 등 특별위원회와 기획위원회, 홍보위원회 등 실행위원회를 통해 조직적이고도 효율적으로 운영될 것입니다.

시카고한인회가 세계적인 강국으로 성장하고 있는 자랑스러운 조국 대한민국과 함께 발 맞추어 미래로 나아가는, 동포들을 대표하는 기관으로 우뚝 서기를 바라며, 끝까지 최선을 다해 경주하겠습니다.

시카고한인회 회장 허재은

It is said that approximately 7.5 million Koreans have ventured abroad and now reside overseas. Many of them live far from their homeland for their own unique reasons, and I believe they have been overcoming the challenges of their respective environments through communication and cooperation within the Korean community, achieving successful lives. North America, including Canada, is home to the largest number of these immigrants. As you may know, in almost every city or town where Koreans reside, there is a “Korean American Association.”

A Korean American Association is an important organization representing Korean immigrants, dedicated to protecting their rights and interests, and enhancing the prestige of the Republic of Korea. It actively supports our community’s advancement into the mainstream society of the United States, helping our people establish a firm place in it, while preserving our cultural heritage and identity, and encouraging the building of a strong Korean community.

The history of the Korean American Association of Chicago dates to 1962. It was founded by key figures in the Korean community, including international students, who recognized the need for a central organization to lead the future of the Korean diaspora. Now, 63 years later, the Association has reached its 37th administration. I must admit that before I began volunteering for the Association, I had little interest in it and knew very little about its work. However, over the past four years serving as the First Vice President, I have come to deeply realize its importance and value. With that conviction, I decided to run for President with the determination to bring new development to the Chicago Korean community, and since July, I have officially begun my term as the 37th President.

As the 37th administration began, we introduced a new slogan: “Leap Forward, Together as One!” This reflects our intention to make a strong leap forward, building upon the solid foundation established by the 35th and 36th administrations. A leap is always built on continuity. I am sincerely grateful to the many executives and board members who decided to continue working with me from the previous term, as well as to those who have newly joined our team. Together, we will devote ourselves to unity within the Korean community, the promotion of our rights and interests, and the cultivation of the next generation. To achieve this, we will operate in an organized and efficient manner through special committees—such as the Government Relations Affairs and the Happiness Sharing Committee—and through executive committees, such as the Planning Committee and the Public Relations Committee.

It is my hope that the Korean American Association of Greater Chicago will stand tall as a representative institution of the Korean community, moving forward in step with our proud homeland, the Republic of Korea, as it continues to grow into a global powerhouse. I will dedicate myself fully to this mission until the very end.
